5 Tips to Help you Prepare for an Awesome Interview

An interview can be exciting but also overwhelming, especially if not prepared. Anything from the way you dress to the way you communicate, nonverbally, can determine the outcome. Below are 5 tips to help you prepare for an awesome interview and give you the confidence you need to succeed in today’s job market.

  1. RESEARCH. Employers actually appreciate the research a candidate does before an interview. It not only makes you stand out but it shows a genuine interest.  Do your research and find out where the company started and where they plan on going. Sometimes what you learn may not necessarily be what you expect or what you hoped for but it can definitely help you determine whether or not it is the right fit. A company’s culture is one of the most important aspects of employment longevity. Do you see yourself working with a company that might not have the same belief system?

 

  1. WARDROBE. Always dress professional. I cannot stress that enough. Too many times I have seen candidates walk into an interview wearing street clothes. This is a big NO. Dress the part. It not only looks good and leaves a great impression, it boosts your confidence. Confidence is key. Dressing for the job you want, can boost your confidence to a point where you feel much more self-aware. It will show in the way you communicate and the way you carry yourself.

 

 

  1. BRING A COPY YOUR RESUME. Ok, you already filled out an application online or emailed your resume, so what. Bring an additional copy when going to an interview. It shows that you have prepared but also helps you stay as consistent as possible. You know what your future employer has been reviewing which also helps you prepare responses. This brings us to tip #4

 

  1. PREPARE RESPONSES. If you know there is a gap between employment history, prepare for that. A good interviewer will always ask why. Keep your responses positive but don’t sound rehearsed. If you are dishonest with your answers, it will show. Giving false information is never acceptable. Just do your best to be positive and upbeat. Always give honest responses.

 

  1. FOLLOW UP. I know this makes some people nervous but it is necessary.  Call the employer the next day and just follow up. It is a part of the interview process. Show enthusiasm, eagerness and follow through.  This will surely impress the employer, not irritate them. Unless of course you harass them with phone calls all day. A simple phone call and maybe voicemail is sufficient. If you don’t hear back, it is ok to call again the next day.
